Dr. Shigeaki Hinohara lived happily for 105 years and he shared his knowledge on how you can do the same

When he was born in 1911, the average life expectancy for a Japanese person was just 40 years. Dr. Shigeaki Hinohara not only managed to defy all odds, he also had many amazing experiences and achieved an incredible amount throughout his life.

During his 105 years living on earth, Hinohara learned deeper perspectives about the world which gave him the chance to learn lessons and apply them to become happy everyday and live longer.

He had unique perspectives on life, despite how dire or demanding the situation was

He has been held captive for four days while handcuffed to a seat on an aircraft in 40-degree heat when the plane he was on was hijacked by Japanese Red Army members. But instead of looking at it as a bad experience, he took the opportunity to evaluate how the human body changes when it’s under that kind of stress – He always had positive thoughts, regardless of the circumstances.

Since he turned 75, he published 150 books and at 88-years old, he wrote a musical which made it onto Broadway. Furthermore, he was still taking on patients up until he died at 105-years old! So what were some of the secrets that allowed him to life such a fulfilled and joyous life?

The healthier you eat, the longer you live

“All people who live long — regardless of nationality, race or gender — share one thing in common: None are overweight.

Most of Hinohara’s meals included vegetables and rice and he would only eat red meat twice per week. He believed healthy foods provide you with the best kind of energy that you need to feel uplifted every day.

Schedule in plans that excite you

Always having short-term plans to look forward to is a great way to keep yourself motivated throughout the week. Even if you’re having a bad day, you know there’s a reward at the end to keep your spirits high.

Never stop doing what you love, even if you’re retired

Hinohara didn’t believe in the term “retire”. He thought the idea of retiring at any age is a bad idea and that it should be much later than 65-years old. Keeping your mind sharp and ticking will boost your happiness and help you feel fulfilled, no matter how old you are.

Knowledge is power and you should be willing to share it

All of his experiences in life gave Dr. Shigeaki Hinohara new perspectives and opportunities to learn and improve his life. But he was never keen on keeping that information to himself. He gave 150 lectures per year to spread as much knowledge to as many people as possible, and he encourages people to do a similar thing – Even if it’s just to one other person.

At 105-years old, he was still taking stairs two at a time!

Hinohara’s lesson here was to always keep your body fit and strong. If he was able to do this at his age, then there’s no excuse for anyone! A stronger body also leads to a stronger mind which is vital for people as they age.
