Pain in the upper back can become a chronic condition
Studies tell us that more than 60 million people in the U.S. have back pain. For most of these people, the upper back is the area that causes the most discomfort. Pain in the upper back is particularly painful because there are many muscles, nerves, ligaments, and tendons. When any one of these becomes inflamed or irritated in some way, upper back pain sets in and it can develop into a chronic problem.
There are a number of causes of back pain that you should know about
Irritation and inflammation of the upper back can happen due to a sports injury, an accident, or even just poor posture. However, there may also be medical causes, such as arthritis, a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, kidney/bone cancer, or spinal degeneration. In the majority of cases though, upper back pain is caused by joint issues and poor posture.
The accompanying symptoms that often come with back pain include:
- Morning sickness
- Shoulder/neck pain
- Redness on the back
If the following symptoms are combined with back pain, you need medical attention urgently:
- Breathing difficulty
- Abdominal pain
- Chest pain
- Jaw pain
You can perform some easy treatment methods at home to alleviate your upper back pain
Relieving pain in your upper back can be done by something as simple as stretching it out every morning. However, it’s advised to visit your doctor first to find out what stretches are the most suitable for your condition.
Applying hot and cold treatments can also be an effective upper back pain treatment. Taking a hot back is a great way to heat up the tense muscles and get them to relax. People have also experienced great results from putting a hot water bottle on the upper back. Cold packs can also be an effective treatment, just make sure you wrap it up in a wet cloth to ensure you don’t get a cold burn.
Paying attention to your sleeping position is also vital. Changing up the positions can help to get rid of upper back pain. Also, if the pain is due to a sports injury, physiotherapy would be your best option.
