Many people believe that you can overdose on marijuana… they’re wrong

Marijuana is now being used pretty commonly all over the world. In the U.S. the amount of people using this plant has doubled over the past 10 years and there are states that are legalizing its use. There are also other places in the world that are legalizing the drug. Along with weed’s increase of usage, there have been many people wondering about the possible risks involved.

Overdosing and death are things people associate with many drugs, right? So it’s fair to assume they’d think the same of marijuana, however, when you take a closer look, you’ll find that no one has ever died from using this drug…

David Schmader, the author of “Weed: The User’s Guide” illustrated just how much weed you would need to overdose and die. Check it out below.

As you can see, this is an impossible amount for a human to consume in a short span of time. Eating absolutely anything in this quantity would cause death.

This chart reveals how weed compares to other drugs and alcohol

While weed is responsible for zero deaths, overdosing on other drugs, such as cocaine, seem to happen pretty regularly in the U.S. In fact, the highest death rate comes from synthetic opioids – otherwise known as the prescribed meds you get from your doctors!

It’s impossible to overdose from smoking marijuana, for a couple major reasons

Smoking weed causes you to inhale a chemical called delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or as it’s most commonly referred to as, THC. This is a psychoactive compound which is what gives people the sensation of being high when smoking it. The human body creates cannabinoids naturally anyway, and these are the same chemicals that are contained in the marijuana plant. Therefore, you already have receptors that can absorb the chemical, regardless of whether it comes internally or externally via smoking weed.

Another reason why you cannot overdose from smoking cannabis is because your brain creates pregnenolone. This is a hormone that hinders the ability of THC to take effect. So this hormone works to ensure that the psychoactive effects of THC are prevented from getting you too high.

Marijuana can still produce some side effects

Despite the fact that you can’t overdose and die from smoking weed, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s completely harmless. There are a number of side effects that you may experience, so being reckless while using it isn’t a good idea.

The majority of people who smoke weed feel relaxed and happy. However, there others who experience some unwanted side effects, which can include paranoia, anxiety, depression, and a decreased ability when it comes to their sense of time. They may even become dizzy while undergoing shallow breathing, as well as dilated pupils, red eyes, an increased appetite, dry mouth, and slower reaction times.

Just as you should avoid doing any of these things while drinking alcohol, the same goes for when you’re smoking marijuana.

Marijuana isn’t currently legal for numerous reasons

First of all, it’s believed to be addictive. However, when compared to legal substances, such as alcohol and prescribed drugs, the “addictive” effects were no more or less in comparison. Weed is commonly associated with heavier narcotics, such as heroine despite the fact that it is not a narcotic.

The research points towards the legalization of weed being extremely beneficial

Despite all of this, marijuana has shown that it can be effective at treating many serious health conditions. The major one being cancer! Marijuana is not a narcotic and has shown itself to have incredible healing benefits and there are more people beginning to realize how useful the plant could be. There are already movements to make it legal, so maybe sometime in the near future it will be a completely legal drug.
